Created year 1986, the .AU extension is been managed by auDA, until the year 2008 the change of ownership was not allowed. Its impossible to register domains under the .AU second level directly, (for an example: mrdomain.au), its necesary that the register is been made under the third level, depending on the kind of owner it has.
Actually there are approximately 1,850,000 registered .AU domains.

.au domain regulations
Index of regulations
Residency requirements
It's mandatory for the registrant contact of .AU domains to be a company and have presence in Australia.
Technical requirements
This extension doesn't have any technical requirements.
Registrations
The .AU domains may be registered under an extension or other, depending on it:
Transfers
To be able to complete .AU domain transfers you'll need your current registrar to give you the domain's AuthCode or EPP-Key, with it you'll be able to verify your domain's ownership.
Once the transfer has started, an e-mail is sent to the email indicated in the form of transfer, the registrant has two days to accept or cancel.
Renewals
The renewal period runs from 90 days before its expiry date to 30 days after it. When a domain is renewed, it is automatically renewed for two years (if expires on January 1, 2011 and is renewed the December 1, 2010, the domain is renewed until January 1, 2013).
Upon reaching the expiration date, domain status passes Expired Hold, the domain's DNS are deleted and can not be updated, renewed or transferred to another registrar.
If the domain is not renewed for the next 30 days after expiration, the status is Pending Purge Expired, the domain can not be updated, renewed or transferred to another registrar. The domain will be purged from the Registry during the next deletion cycle.
Cancellations
It's impossible to cancel a .AU domain registration.
DNS modifications
DNS modification is immediate, please note they must propagate through the network, this process can take up to 6-12 hours to complete, until then the domain will still point to the previous DNS servers.
DNSSEC
We allow the usage of DNSSEC on .au domains. Your domain can take advantage of this additional security layer that DNS servers that are compatible with this technology can provide.
More information is available at: DNSSEC: What is it and how does it work.
Domain owner change
.AU domain ownership cannot be done automatically, an ownership change must be requested to the registry, this has an extra cost (the domain is renewed for two years since the ownership change completion).
Permitted characters
.au domains permit characters from 'a' to 'z', numbers from '0' to '9' and hyphens '-'.
A hyphen '-' is not permitted in the first or last position of the domain name.
Two consecutive hyphens are not permitted in the 3rd and 4th position.
Official documentation
In this section you will find links to official documentation of the extension.
